“Together Again”
Edwin John Martof, of Masury, Ohio, died peacefully Sunday morning, May 3, 2015, at the Hospice House, Poland, Ohio, surrounded by his family following a period of declining health.
Mr. Martof was born on August 25, 1922, in Masontown, Pennsylvania, a son of Michael and Mary (Bandish) Martof.
Ed attended Cumberland Township High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He also played semi-professional football for a short period of time.
After the Pearl Harbor attack in 1942, Ed enlisted into the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the Seabees construction unit in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, where he served three years. Upon his return home, he fell in love with a neighborhood girl, Rose Stypula. They were married on May 1, 1946, in St. Mary’s Church, Crucible, Pennsylvania, and to this union eight children were born. Family gatherings were always extra special as family time meant the world to them.
Ed worked at several area factories including LTV for 17 years before his retirement in 1979. In his leisure time, he enjoyed pitching horseshoes. In addition, he was an avid fan of thoroughbred racing as well as college basketball.
He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, St. Bernadette Parish, Masury, and the United Steel Workers.
His surviving family includes six children, Gene Martof, Greensboro, NC, Janet Mitcheltree and her husband Thomas, Masury, Rita Gilliland and her husband Hank, Hartford, OH, Rick Martof (his best friend), Masury, Rosemary Frazier and her husband Phil, Hubbard, OH, and Nancy Clayton and her husband John, Brookfield, OH; his daughter-in-law, Carol Martof, Hartford; and his son-in-law, Michael Wilt, Amhert, Mass.
He also leaves twelve grandchildren, Dan and Mike Martof, Sam Wilt, Tom and Matt Mitcheltree, Nick, Josh, and Adam Gilliland, Kyle and Kelly Frazier, Erika and Leighann Clayton; and six great-grandchildren, Maisie Dube, Katherine, Lily, Joseph, Kaci, and Evan Mitcheltree. He also has one brother, Lorence Martof.
Mr. Martof was preceded in death by his Rose, they shared 67 wonderful years together before her passing in 2013; his brothers, Dan, Mike, Bernard, Leonard, and John Martof; and his sister, Frances Martof. Also preceding him were his son, Ed Martof; his daughter, Vicki Wilt; and his granddaughter, Jennifer Wells.
Ed’s family would like to thank the amazing staff of the Hospice House for their abounding kindness and loving care. In addition, special thanks to the office of Dr. P.Y. Solanki, who was his primary care physician. Their care and concern for Ed and Rose will always be remembered. We also want to acknowledge our longtime neighbors, the Smith family, who helped our parents tremendously through the years.

In accordance to his wishes, services will be private. He will be laid to rest next to his bride in Brookfield Township Cemetery.
