John A. McKenzie, Jr. of Hubbard, Ohio, entered through the gates of Heaven during the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 11, 2017, while at home and following a period of declining health. He was 80.

John was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on May 1, 1937, a son to John A. & Louise N. (Lohr) McKenzie, Sr.

Following high school, John attended Case University where he studied Mechanical engineering before being accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He served aboard the USS Independence as Communications Officer during its outfitting and testing. He later served on the USS Warrington where he was injured when a gun mount exploded causing him to lose sight in his left eye and his hearing. He spent 14 months in Bethesda Medical Center recovering from his injuries, after which he received an honorable discharge. John also received a bachelor degree from Youngstown State University where he was an instructor in the mathematics department.

John was Controller at Valley Mold in Hubbard, Ohio and later Micro Dot Corporation. He was also the owner and operator of Dynacom Systems and Data Services, McKenzie Square, Inc., and Classic Motor Cars.

His memberships included: Hubbard Club of Rotary International where he served as President and District Governor, Paul Harris Fellow, Charter Member, and Past-President of the Brookfield Club of Rotary International, Mahoning Valley Classic Car Club, and a former member of the Wick Lodge #481 Free & Accepted Masons, Youngstown, Ohio, as well as 32 Degree Mason of the Ancient Accepted Order of the Scottish Rite Valley of Youngstown. In his spare time, he enjoyed cheering on the Browns, Indians, Cavaliers, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Navy Sports. In addition, he was also a ham radio operator under the handle “K8SSU”, and a lover of classic and vintage automobiles.

Survivors include: his wife, Patricia A. (Durig) McKenzie, whom he married June 14, 1975; his children, Michael Conlan (Kathy), Liberty Twp., Ohio, Kevin Conlan, Howland Twp., Ohio, Jennifer Shultz (Jeffrey), Liberty Twp., and John A. McKenzie, V, Hubbard; and his 3 grandchildren, Christopher Conlan (Shereen), Zachary Conlan, & Katie Conlan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A time of gathering will be held in John’s honor on Sunday, October 15, 2017, from 2-4 PM in the Coalburg United Methodist Church, 1906 Wick-Campbell Rd., Hubbard, Ohio 44425. His celebration continues at 4 PM where a funeral service will be offered. He will be laid to rest with his family in Washington Cemetery, Washington, Pennsylvania.
