Mary Catherine Summerville

Mary Catherine “Katie” Summerville, of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, formerly of Masury, Ohio, began her heavenly journey on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, while at home and surrounded by her family, following a period of declining health. She was 91.

Katie was born May 27, 1924, in Crest Springs, Pennsylvania, a daughter to William S. & Laura G. (McConnell) Hoffman.

She fell in love with Harold R. Summerville, Sr. and they exchanged vows on September 29, 1945. Born to this union were ten children, Harold Jr., Allen, Howard, David, Mary Jane, Patricia, Elizabeth, Laura, Arlene, & Sharon. She was a proud homemaker for her family and loved watching her children grow. In addition, she helped supplement her family by working as a press operator for more than 10 years at Howell Industries, Masury.

Mary Catherine was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church, Hermitage, where she was former Sunday School Teacher.

In her spare time, she enjoyed baking and was especially known for her bread. She especially loved playing with kids.

She is survived by: her children, Harold R. Summerville, Jr. (Orinda), Greenville, Pennsylvania, Allen J. Summerville (MaryAnn), Burghill, Ohio, Howard J. Summerville (Pamela), Selah, Washington, David L. Summerville, Yakima, Washington, Mary Jane Flynn (Thomas), Sharon, Pennsylvania, Patricia R. Moss (George), Masury, Elizabeth J. O’Linc (Gregory), Hermitage, Laura G. Link (Dennis), Hermitage, and Sharon S. Metze (Jeffrey), Vienna, Ohio; her 27 grandchildren; her 44 great-grandchildren (plus 5 on the way); her 5 great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Josie Lutz, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Harold; by her daughter, Arlene B. Homontowski; by her great-grandson, Madison Summerville; by her 3 brothers; and by her 6 sisters.

A time of gathering to honor Katie’s life will be held on Friday, April 22, 2016, from 11-1 PM in the Sharon Baptist Church, 1531 George Street, Hermitage, Pennsylvania 16148. A celebration of life service will immediately follow at 1:00 PM. She will be laid to rest in America’s Cemetery, Hermitage.
