Sonja Black

Sonja G. Black, of Vienna, Ohio, passed away at 9:15 PM Saturday, April 6, 2019, as a patient of Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, Ohio, following a brief illness. She was 79.

Sonja was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on November 12, 1939, a daughter to Donald and Florence (Shonce) Lunn.

In 1957, she graduated from South High School, Youngstown, and shortly thereafter, married Richard “Dick” W. Black on June 29th of the same year. Together they started a family and born to this union were two sons, Rick and Don.

For a brief time, she worked at Packard Electric, and eventually she started a beauty shop out of her home, “Lasting Curl”. Sonja operated her shop for over 30 years before she officially retired.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Hubbard, Ohio, where she was active with the Woman’s Group, volunteered in the church kitchen for special events, and participated on the decorating committee.

In her spare time, she enjoyed organizing the Yankee Lake Craft Show in the Country, making ceramics, and working puzzle books. However, she loved to watch tennis, much to her family's dismay.

Survivors include: her husband, Dick; her sons, Rick Black (Barb), Brookfield, Ohio, and Don Black (Jackie), Hayes, Virginia; her grandsons, Nick, Clayton, & Garrett Black; her step-grandchildren, Rachel, Joshua, & Sarah; her nieces, Sandy, Bonnie, & Terri; and her nephew, Scott.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald; by her mother, Florence Cotterman; and by her sister, Betty Andrews.

A time of gathering to honor Sonja will be held from 4-7 PM on Thursday, April 11, 2019, in the home of Briceland Funeral Service, LLC, 379 State Route 7, SE, Brookfield, Ohio 44403. Her celebration continues with a funeral service at 11 AM on Friday, April 12, 2019, at Grace Lutheran Church, 111 Hall Avenue, Hubbard, Ohio 44425.
